Shopify App Monorepo
An enterprise-grade, standardized B2B Shopify app infrastructure — built to unify deployment and architecture across multiple high-volume merchants.
Problem
An agency managing multiple enterprise Shopify apps faced severe fragmentation. Six different projects meant six different deployment pipelines, inconsistent architectures, and scattered database schemas. The challenge: this lack of standardization created maintenance nightmares, delayed feature shipping, and made scaling across new merchants nearly impossible. A unified, predictable foundation was required.
Architecture & Solution
The infrastructure is centralized within a monorepo utilizing pnpm workspaces. It features a shared package ecosystem for database schemas (Prisma), TypeScript definitions, and UI components (Polaris). Each merchant app imports these shared conventions while maintaining isolated execution environments, deploying independently to Netlify via a standardized CI/CD pipeline.
Data Model
Centralized Prisma schema managed within a shared package. Each app maintains isolated environments but imports the shared generated Prisma client to enforce type consistency.
Failure Handling & Resilience
Custom Shopify App Bridge webhooks with idempotency keys and automated retry queues. Prevents dropped orders during traffic spikes.
Permissions & Security
Enforces strict API route middleware validating Shopify HMAC signatures, checking active subscriptions, and utilizing short-lived session tokens.
Implementation Decisions
- Monorepo workspaces — Utilizing pnpm workspaces eliminates dependency drift and allows instant sharing of core types and components across all six applications.
- Centralized schema management — A shared Prisma package enforces strict data model consistency while allowing each app to connect to isolated database instances.
- Standardized deployment pipelines — Uniform CI/CD workflows ensure predictable, error-free releases across all environments, regardless of the individual app's complexity.
- Idempotent webhook handling — Custom App Bridge webhooks feature automated retry queues, preventing dropped payloads during high-traffic enterprise flash sales.
